Damian Lillard desires to perform for Miami, but which teams have the opportunity to trade for him? In a transaction, determining where Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard lands requires two steps. Who should the Trail Blazers trade him to? Which team will he compete for during the 2023–24 season? The response is not identical, nor does it need to be. However, it could be the same.

Lillard has a preferred destination in mind, but the Blazers are seeking the best possible return in a trade. These two are currently unequal. At this time, the Blazers do not want to trade Lillard to his preferred team if it is not in their best interest.

    The Miami Heat

Lillard desires to play for the Heat (and presumably only the Heat), alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, for team president Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Lillard would provide Miami with the scoring and playmaking it sorely needed at points during the playoffs, particularly against Denver in the NBA Finals.

In the last four seasons, the Heat have reached the NBA Finals twice: in the 2020 Orlando bubble and last season. Spoelstra is one of the greatest coaches, and Riley, Andy Elisburg, and Adam Simon lead one of the best front offices.

Not only does Lillard want this trade to occur, but so do the Heat. Not so straightforward. Today, the Blazers are unimpressed by the Heat’s contributions. Due to NBA regulations, the Heat cannot trade their first-round selections until 2028 or 2030. The trade hinges on these selections and Miami’s Tyler Herro. Without the involvement of a third or fourth team, which is a possibility, Portland has nothing but apathetic gestures.

Nevertheless, when it comes time to trade Lillard, the Heat’s Heat.   could be the best.

    Brooklyn Nets

Lillard stated in a Showtime podcast in June that he could potentially play alongside Mikal Bridges in Brooklyn. This no longer appears to be the case; however, the Nets’ trade offer for the Trail Blazers is considerably more attractive than the Heat’s.

In February, the Nets traded Kevin Durant to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for four first-round selections (2023, 2025, 2027, and 2029).

Having just traded Durant and Kyrie Irving due to their desire to leave, the Nets do not desire a similar situation with Lillard. Even if they have valuable assets, many teams may not want to use them in a trade for Lillard.

    Los Angeles Clippers

The Clippers don’t have many years left with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, and if they wanted to make one last run with another All-Star, Lillard is a fantastic option. If the Clippers wish to retain Leonard and/or George, however, their trade options are constrained because they cannot assemble a package that includes a first-round pick before 2028. Even if the Clippers were prepared to trade one of Leonard and George, Portland would not be interested in acquiring them for a youth-oriented rebuild.

    Utah Jazz

Like the Brooklyn Nets, the Utah Jazz have appealing draft choices, and like the Oklahoma City Thunder, it is difficult to keep up with all of the Jazz’s first-round draft picks. They have multiple first-round choices from Minnesota, Cleveland, and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2025, 2027, and 2028, including three in 2025, four in 2027, and two in 2028.

Whether it’s a trade with Portland or another team, the Jazz are in a position to expedite their rebuild through trades.

    The Boston Celtics.

The Celtics have draft choices and are a constantly improving team. With two All-NBA perimeter players in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who appears to be on the verge of signing a massive extension with Boston, Lillard makes little sense.

    Philadelphia 76ers

James Harden opted into the final year of his contract for 2023-24, with the expectation that the Sixers will attempt to trade him. However, Philadelphia is not required to do so and may not. Keeping Harden for one more season alongside Joel Embiid may be the wisest course of action. The Sixers lack the first-round selections that interest the Trail Blazers.
